Exhibition and Opening Reception

with  Stone Sculptor Collen Nyanhongo

Opening Reception 6pm, Oct 1, 2010

Live Music 8pm

Art from Zimbabwe receives worldwide acclaim. Newsweek hailed it as "perhaps the most important new art form to emerge from Africa in this Century." The New York Times stated that it “has become a wholly indigenous modern art form created exclusively as a forum of artistic expression." Collen Nyanhongo is a member of the most celebrated family of stone sculptors and at a young age learned from his well known father, Claude, founding member of the Zimbabwe Sculpture movement.

Collen blends traditional into transcendental metaphorical expression. His work has been honored in Zimbabwe, France Netherlands, Denmark, Australia, Holland, England, Switzerland, Germany, South Africa and the United States.

Eldorado Springs Art Center will be hosting an exhibition of Collen’s stone carvings from Oct 1 through Oct 10th.

Stone Carving Workshops with Collen Nyanhongo

Session 1

Oct 2,3,9,10

9am – 4pm

There will be material fee for each session. To enroll please contact ESAC at info@eldoradospringsartcenter.com or call 303 378 0454

Teaching and sharing his intimate relationship to stone and the sculpting process, Collen will help you discover the delight of conversing with your own stone and allowing it to emerge into an image that both you and the stone create. Working mostly with hand tools students will learn the intricacies of stone carving. We will be carving Springstone a beautiful stone brought from Zimbabwe.

This class will be geared from beginner to expert and students will be able to leave with their own sculpture. Once you meet Collen you will trust, revel in his tutorage and be thrilled with your creation.

More information on Collen can be seen at www.collennyanhongo.com

Mark Miller - Woodwinds

Saturday, May 1st at Eldorado Springs Art Center, 8pm

Chris Lee, Colleen Orien and Mark Miller have been making music together for over thirty years. Their music is a lyrical interweaving of voice, flute, soprano saxophone, cello, vibraphone and percussion, that reveals an allegiance to both the jazz and classical traditions. Original compositions, poetry, jazz standards and improvisation join the melodic and harmonic language of jazz with the sensitivity and texture of classical chamber music.

“Sculpting the Truth”
During this weekend we will go beyond the obvious and uncover the essence of the human form. Organizing forms in the space they occupy in relation to one another is to find the hidden balance that makes a sculpture. The force behind the search for the movement, balance, and conflict of the forms is what brings honesty, truth, and soul to a work of art. This class will open the student to a new way of looking, seeing, and understanding.

The ability to sculpt is a gift, a gift that comes with the responsibility to develop it and treat it with respect.

This class is not about recipes for making pretty sculptures.

It is about the hunt for the ineffable substance of truth that is known to every human, yet hidden from them. When found, it is recognized by everybody and accepted as very familiar and practically intimate.

I can not teach anybody how to sculpt in 30 hours. But I can help you to see differently. I can give you a taste of what sculpting is. Just be open to try it.

Simon Kogan

Learn to process and create your own cast iron sculpture in this two part workshop at the Eldorado Springs Art Center.  You will learn the complete process to making a sculpture in iron including; creating a resin bonded sand mold, pouring melted iron.

Resin Bonded Sand Mold Workshop

This workshop will go over step by step how to make a simple mold which will later be used in the iron cast.  The mold is created by mixing sand with resin and then compacting it around your sculpture.  Once the resin dries the sand becomes a solid piece that is resistant to the heat of molten metal. There is a material fee of $2.00 per 10lbs of  sand used.

Objects that work best for sand molds are simple in shape and have volume. Things like fruit, baseballs, light bulbs, and bottles work well and of course your sculpture. We recommend you bring in several objects you would like to try to cast and we can figure out what would work best.

Cost $135

Iron Cast

This 2 day workshop iron is a group activity where the iron is melted and poured into the molds to create your sculpture.  It is a fast paced and very exciting process to be involved in.  There are a number of jobs to do during the pour and everybody will be involved.  Saturday we will set up previously made molds and equipment for Sundays pour and discuss procedure, strategy and safety measures. Sunday we will pour molten iron into our molds to create a sculpture that will be ready for finishing. Some chasing will be required. You are only limited in size to a piece that can be handled by hand. There is a material fee of $1.00 per lb of cast iron.

Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art

<< Sunday May 31,  2 to 5PM >>

Come and explore Eldorado Canyon in the spring.  Starting with investigative sketches, we will search for aspects in the landscape that draw our attention to detail.  Whether it be bark, leaves, flowers, or stone, we will focus on patterns found in nature.  Afterwords, we return indoors to the Eldorado Springs Art Center to work on a large color artwork inspired by our earlier sketches.  Each person will return home with a completed drawing. Please bring with you a sketchbook and pencil.  We will provide one large piece of heavy paper, various color mediums, a snack, and water. Taught by Pattie Lee Becker
